Just because you can’t get high from eating hemp seeds doesn’t mean this dressing won’t take you on a rocket trip ride into outer space! Look at that picture, it looks like it was taken in the space shuttle.
Okay, let’s be serious! This hemp miso dressing is no joke. Super easy to make, just throw all the ingredients into your blender and let it spin around until it reaches the smooth creamy consistency we all love from dressings.
This recipe is inspired by a similar one from Bon Appétit. I saw it on their website and thought it looked delicious. I initially followed their recipe, however, it screamed out to me, “add more flavour”. I started with adding the garlic and onion powder which really amped it up and then came the agave. It was screaming for a hint of sweetness.
What I love, is how the ingredients really compliment each other. The toasted sesame seeds mellow out the bitterness of the hemp seeds. The chickpea miso brings out the umami notes and I find smoothes out the flavour. Now, if you don’t have chickpea miso feel free to use any lighter coloured miso. It’s all about bringing the same flavour profile.
Let’s talk about the addition of agave for a second. When I first wrote out the recipe I hadn’t written down the agave. After a few taste tests, I felt it needed a touch of sweetness. So, I added 1 tablespoon. Depending on your sweetness needs you could add a touch more or less. Make this dressing yours by adjusting where you see fit. I always taste as I go. Start with half a tablespoon then add more if you feel the dressing isn’t sweet enough.
Now, I could go on and on about the ingredients in this hemp miso dressing. I could talk about how amazing they are together and how hemp is such a wonderful seed full of healthy fats, protein, minerals, and fiber. I could also talk about how eating hemp seeds won’t make you high but wouldn’t that be something if it could.
I think you would be better off just making this dressing and I sure hope you enjoy it!
- 1/2 cup hemp seeds
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tbsp chickpea miso
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp agave
- 4 tsp sesame seeds, toasted, divided
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- In your blender add the hemp seeds, water, miso, lemon juice, olive oil, and agave. Give it a good blend until it's well combined.
- Next add the toasted sesame seeds, onion, and garlic powder and blend again. Add more water if you find it's too thick.
- Pour into your favourite dressing jar! Keeps in the fridge for approximately 5 days.
I like to toast extra sesame seeds to sprinkle on top of the dressing as well as on the dish I'm eating.
